The Castle of Mouans-Sartoux

In the heart of the Côte d'Azur, in a 16th century castle in the middle of a large park, a magical place dedicated to contemporary art.
Built at the end of the 15th or at the very beginning of the 16th century, the Château de Mouans remained the property of the Grasses until 1750 and then of the Villeneuves. After the Revolution it passed to the Durand de Sartoux, then to the Peguilhans.
During history he had many misfortunes. It was besieged during the wars of religion; the then lord, Pompey of Grasse was a reformed. He was assassinated in his castle of Bormes in 1589. In Mouans, his widow resisted the siege of the Duke of Savoy in 1592.
In 1707, during the War of the League of Augsburg, the castle was once again besieged by Austro-Piedmontese troops. Its lord, Alexandre de Grasse was seriously injured there and the castle was looted.
During the Revolution, the Château de Mouans suffered the fate of many stately homes. It is the "good city of Grasse" which will largely destroy the castle of Mouans.
After buying the château at the beginning of the 19th century, the Durand de Sartoux family restored it.
Reconstruction work is underway. It will be rebuilt according to the original plans. It will thus retain its triangular architecture, its three towers and its interior courtyard. Inaugurated in September 1990, the Espace de l'Art Concret, located in the Château de Mouans, was created with the aim of raising awareness among the widest public about today's art.
